FDA approves CDC’s new rapid flu test

first_imgOct 1, 2008 (CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yesterday approved a new diagnostic test developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that can quickly distinguish seasonal influenza strains from an evolving virus that might have pandemic potential in hours rather than days. The test, called the Human Influenza Virus Real-Time RT-PCR Detection and Characterization Panel (rRT-PCR Flu Panel), can detect flu viruses and differentiate between seasonal and novel influenza strains, according to a statement released yesterday by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).The device isolates and amplifies viral genetic material from patients’ nose and throat samples. Then it labels the viral genetic material with fluorescent molecules. The FDA also cleared a diagnostic instrument called the Applied Biosystems 7500 Fast Dx that detects and analyzes the fluorescent-labeled viral genetic material, the HHS statement said. The test panel and diagnostic system can detect and characterize commonly circulating human influenza viruses, avian influenza A viruses such as H5N1, and novel viruses within 4 hours rather than the days it takes for conventional tests. Also, the system can test multiple samples simultaneously.Mike Leavitt, HHS Secretary, said in the statement that the new diagnostic test represents a significant achievement for public health surveillance. “The test allows us to better support laboratories on the front line of influenza testing in the United States and abroad,” he said.Julie Gerberding, MD, MPH, the CDC’s director, said in the statement that the test provides another tool to fight seasonal influenza. “We’ll now be able to detect influenza in the community faster, which allows us to take steps more quickly to protect and save lives,” she said.Three groups collaborated on the development of the new test: the CDC, Applied Biosystems, based in Foster City, Calif., and the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL). State public health laboratories in Virginia, Iowa, California, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and Washington conducted clinical evaluations of the new flu panel.CDC-qualified labs will be able to use the new diagnostic test this fall, and some facilities will be able to receive free reagents, the HHS said, adding that the test should ensure the accuracy of influenza testing results among the different sites that perform subtype testing.Rosemary Humes, the APHL’s senior advisor for scientific affairs, told CIDRAP News that labs have been using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing to analyze influenza viruses for a while, but they’ve never had standardized reagents until now. “The speed and accuracy is a great asset,” she said, adding that the APHL helped develop the test and conducted validity testing. If a lab detects a novel strain with the new diagnostic testing system, the results will be more credible, Humes said.Leavitt said the test’s ability to identify emerging influenza viruses is especially important. “This breakthrough allows for a more timely detection of a pandemic virus, which helps in determining when to begin broad control strategies as well as life-saving mitigation measures, such as closing schools, cancelling social gatherings, and informing businesses to begin work-at-home policies,” he said in the statement.See also:Sep 30 HHS press releasehttp://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2008pres/09/20080930a.htmllast_img read more

A Warriors’ trade season primer: Analyzing D’Angelo Russell’s fit and solving the Ky Bowman problem

first_imgThis season hasn’t gone as planned, and the Warriors have already had to shift expectations. After Sunday, further recalibration could be on the way. While coach Steve Kerr anticipated the team to take a step back, he did not expect to be sitting at the bottom of the league standings more than a quarter of the way into the season. A stumbling start and the desire to convert Ky Bowman’s two-way contract into a regular roster spot could lead to the Warriors making a trade between now and the Feb. …last_img

Video CAPTCHAs Promise Better Security, Less Frustration

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Solving CAPTCHAs – the text puzzles with distorted letters that many sites use to ensure that you are human – has become a daily reality for many Internet users. Sadly, these tests are often a major source of frustration, too. And while CAPTCHAs are used to provide a decent level of security for site owners, many of these systems have now been broken or are getting gamed by hackers who simply hire cheap workers to solve them manually. NuCaptcha, a Vancouver, B.C.-based company, aims to change all of this with a new video captcha system that launches today. With NuCaptcha, users see a moving text over an animated background. NuCaptcha then shows three red letters as part of a sentence that flows through the video, and users type these three letters to solve the video CAPTCHA. As an accessibility feature, NuCaptcha also offers voiceover audio. Developers will be able to choose between different themes for their sites. NuCaptcha is also thinking about giving developers the option to bring their own brands and videos to the CAPTCHAs on their site in the future. The company’s system should also work on devices that don’t support Flash, though we weren’t able to test this yet.Reducing Frustration and Increasing ConversionAccording to a recent study (PDF), about 25% of users’ attempts to solve CAPTCHAs from reCAPTCHA simply fail. For businesses that use services like reCAPTCHA, this means that a quite a few of potential users are likely to abandon the registration or shopping process. For other CAPTCHA services from Yahoo, Google and Microsoft, and on sites like Digg.com and Slashdot, which implement their own systems, these numbers are somewhat lower, but even there, more than 10% of attempts to solve a given CAPTCHA end in failure.NuCaptcha argues that 99% of its users are able to solve the company’s video CAPTCHAs. While we can’t test the company’s numbers, we did get a chance to test the system, and the tests were indeed very easy to solve. How NuCaptcha Fights Hackers and Human “Solvers”As the company’s CEO and co-founder Michel Giasson told us earlier this week, it is extremely easy for humans to solve these moving CAPTCHAs. Machines, however, have a very hard time with this. To discourage paid human “solvers,” the company uses sophisticated machine learning algorithms to detect potential abuse of the system and then slows the video CAPTCHA down to the point where solving it becomes too time consuming and costly. According to Giasson, professional human CAPTCHA solvers need about four seconds per CAPTCHA. When NuCaptcha suspects that sombody is abusing the system, it can slow its text scroll down to the point where it takes more than 15 seconds to even display the CAPTCHA text. I think that all this around Bamford and Nketiah doesn’t help both of them.”It is natural that people argue about my decision because they don’t have all the reasons I have. I want both of them to be a success this year. We have 46 matches or 50 matches.”We are in the first 25 per cent of the competition. I think that we have time so I can find a way that both of them shine. first_imgA high end zone view of Neyland Stadium(Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)For a few minutes, Tennessee Volunteers fans were a bit confused as to why four-star linebacker recruit Quart’e Sapp was no longer considering playing for their program. After all, it was just a few days ago that Sapp officially narrowed his decision down to four schools – Michigan State, Missouri, Miami (FL) and Tennessee. But the high school senior was actually pulling a fast one on Vols fans – while he only had three hats on the table in front of him, he pulled a fourth one out to commit to UT. Check it out, via 247 Sports’ Jake Rowe.Sapp is now the 15th Tennessee commit ranked four stars or better by 247 Sports. UT’s class is rated fourth overall.last_img
