Nigeria Faces Elimination from ITF/CAT Junior Tennis

first_imgThe result leaves Nigeria with an enormous task as they need to win all their three matches against Togo on Thursday to stand any chance of progression for the main tournament slated for September in Casablanca, MoroccShare this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegram Nigeria’s boys’ team, wednesday failed to raise their game at the ongoing1st ITF/CAT West and Central African Teams’ Championship holding in Lagos as they stumbled to a 2-1 defeat to Benin thus making qualification a daunting task. The boys’ team consisting Fortune Joseph, Gabriel Inyang and David Ekpeyong fell to Ghana in their opening two singles as well as their doubles match on the first day and continued their unimpressive performance losing two of their three matches to Benin on Wednesday. With the girls’ team not in action until today, the host country endured another frustrating day despite the heroic display of Inyang who managed to put some smiles on the faces of the home fans. The 11-year-old from the VGC Tennis Club, Lagos is the most exposed among the Nigerian players, with training at the prestigious IMG Tennis Academy in Florida in 2015 and winning two tournaments in New York in 2016 and he justified the high expectations placed on him by beating Emmanuel Udensi 6-2, 6-4.Ekpeyong from Kodian Tennis Foundation, Port Harcourt, could not match the performance of his compatriot as he was beaten 6-4, 6-0 by Gillian Nahum while Benin took the doubles 7-6 6-2.last_img read more

John Terry: Eden Hazard is as good as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

first_imgChelsea captain John Terry hailed Eden Hazard as one of the world’s best players after the Belgian inspired the Blues to a 2-1 win over Stoke.Hazard tucked home a penalty to put Chelsea in front before Charlie Adam scored a memorable 65-yard equaliser for the visitors. But Loic Remy was on hand to turn home Hazard’s square pass to wrap up the three points and take Chelsea seven points clear at the top of the Premier League. And, in a game where Diego Costa lasted just 10 minutes having been introduced from the bench before being forced off with a hamstring injury, Hazard was the man to make the difference with Terry quick to praise him. “He was excellent,” Terry told Sky Sports 1.”He has been our best player by a long way this year and in those games when you are looking for a bit of extra, a bit of magic from someone he is the one who steps up and managed to create something. He is up there with the (Lionel) Messi’s and (Cristiano) Ronaldo’s and can still get better and better.”With just eight games remaining Chelsea are hot favourites to take the title but Terry is urging caution to those who believe their name is already on the trophy.”It was a tough game, we knew it was going to be difficult,” he added. “They made it difficult last year. First half they were very tight and they are a very well organised team, it was tough but we ground it out. “It is the old cliche but it is ticking a box then moving on. “We have a massive game away at QPR, a big London derby for us. We just need to keep putting three points on the board.”The goal from Charlie Adam was a great goal and it stunned us just before half-time.–last_img read more

Lynwood knocked off by Bishop Amat

first_imgLYNWOOD – Only in the CIF-Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs could a two-time defending state-champion win a quarter-finals game and have it be considered an upset. That was the case on Saturday night when the Bishop Amat High School girls basketball team, seeded No. 5 in the division, posted a 57-52 upset of No. 4-seeded Lynwood. There’s been quite a few, in fact. Saturday’s win was Amat’s 19th consecutive postseason victory dating back to 2005. The Lancers improved to 24-4 and will host nationally-ranked Long Beach Poly at a site to be determined on Tuesday night. Things have gotten considerably tougher for Amat, which was moved up from Division III-A this season after winning three consecutive Southern Section titles. The Lancers also own the past two Division III state championships. “For us to come in here and beat them, that’s a great win,” Amat coach Richard Wiard said. “They’re as good as any team we’ve beaten in the past three years.” center_img 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
