LUH apologises to Burtonport man whose leg was amputated after angiogram

first_imgLetterkenny University Hospital has apologised to a Burtonport man in the High Court whose leg had to be amputated after he went into the hospital for an angiogram. In the letter to 77-year-old Hugh McElroy, a retired construction worker, the hospital’s general manager said the care afforded to him in 2014 and 2015 was not to a standard which they would have hoped or expected.Sean Murphy told Mr McElroy that he apologised unreservedly for the quality of care he received and acknowledged the devastating impact this had on his life. He said he recognised that nothing he or any of the team could say, could make up for the impact on Mr McElroy’s quality of life and on his family.Mr McElroy went into Letterkenny University Hospital in September 2014 for an angiogram – a procedure where a tube is inserted into the groin and threaded up to the heart to check the blood vessels. He developed a blood clot at the site where the angiogram had been inserted and was readmitted to hospital in Letterkenny where his condition worsened.By the time he was transferred to University Hospital Galway, on 14 October 2014, he was in poor condition and had to undergo surgery. He subsequently underwent further surgeries and treatment. But in September 2015, a decision was made to amputate his leg.Details of the settlement made with Mr McElroy were not revealed in court.LUH apologises to Burtonport man whose leg was amputated after angiogram was last modified: April 8th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:burtonportLetterkenny University Hospitallast_img read more

Sunburn? Smear on the DNA

first_imgDNA makes for an excellent sunscreen, researchers have found. And that’s not all.Today’s oily sunscreens often fail at durability and protection and may dry out the skin. We need new concoctions. How about DNA? At Binghamton University, Science Daily reports, researchers “have developed a coating made out of DNA that gets better at protecting skin from ultraviolet light the more you expose it to the sun, and it also keeps your skin hydrated.”Guy German, one of the researchers, explains what his team found:German and a team of researchers developed thin and optically transparent crystalline DNA films and irradiated them with UV light. They found that the more they exposed the film to UV light, the better the film got at absorbing it.“If you translate that, it means to me that if you use this as a topical cream or sunscreen, the longer that you stay out on the beach, the better it gets at being a sunscreen,” said German. If that’s not good enough, they found another application for DNA covering: wound protection.“Not only do we think this might have applications for sunscreen and moisturizers directly, but if it’s optically transparent and prevents tissue damage from the sun and it’s good at keeping the skin hydrated, we think this might be potentially exploitable as a wound covering for extreme environments,” he said.If this ever comes on the market, you’ll know which brand to buy: DNA brand. This is remarkable that a molecule known for its information storage can provide other independent benefits.(Visited 95 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

USGBC and Home Depot Launch Green Products Site

first_imgThe U.S. Green Building Council and Home Depot have collaborated on a microsite on the retailer’s website that allows homeowners and homebuilders to search the store’s database for green products, many of which can contribute points or help meet prerequisites for LEED for Homes projects. The microsite lists more than 2,500 products sold at Home Depot that qualify as green and can be used to bring a project closer to LEED for Homes certification, according to a recent USGBC press release.Citing a McGraw-Hill Construction study that indicates the market share of green homes in residential construction is growing, USGBC and Home Depot point out that, beyond marketing their brands and services, the new website reinforces the idea that green building — or at least many of the products that go into it — is accessible to most consumers.A handy toolIf the website is promoted vigorously enough, it likely will increase awareness of LEED for Homes, although it’s not clear it will lead to more program certifications, Nadav Malin, president of BuildingGreen, told GBA. Malin added that USGBC and Home Depot apparently have focused extensively on training store employees to offer proper guidance on green products in the retailer’s inventory. He did point out, however, that the website — which includes a tool designed to allow users to search for products in more than 20 categories, and includes a LEED point rating for most of those products — doesn’t indicate which LEED for Homes scoring criteria the points apply to.“Without that piece of information,” he noted, “this whole presentation is much less useful than in might otherwise be. Someone could conceivably buy a product based on this label assuming that it will help them earn a certain point, only to find out that it has the label because of a different point entirely.”We’ve asked for clarification on this issue and will update this post as soon as we get a response.last_img read more

Tendulkar to Ethics Officer: No tractable conflict, BCCI responsible for this current situation

first_imgSachin Tendulkar has rejected BCCI’s observation that his alleged Conflict of Interest falls under “tractable category,” terming the parent body “responsible for the current situation” arising due to his role as a member of the Cricket Advisory Committee and an ‘Icon’ of Mumbai Indians. In fact, Tendulkar in his 13-point response (in possession of PTI) to BCCI Ethics Officer DK Jain has requested him to call Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai and CEO Rahul Johri to “clarify their position.”According to the BCCI’s constitution clause 38 (3) (a): “Tractable conflicts are those that are resolvable or permissible or excusable through recusal of the individual concerned and – or – with full disclosure of the interest involved.”All three CAC members — Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman — have been served notices by the Ombudsman cum Ethics officer DK Jain and all three have rejected in their initial affidavits. However what seems to have angered the legendary cricketer is BCCI CEO Johri’s letter (in consultation with CoA) to Jain where just like Ganguly, Tendulkar’s issue has also been termed as a case of “tractable Conflict of Interest,” a contention that the iconic cricketer firmly rejected. The most pertinent points where Tendulkar has given a strong rebuttal are points 10, 11 and 12.”Without prejudice to the aforesaid, the noticee submits that it is surprising that the BCCI, being the very authority responsible for the noticee’s empanelment to the Cricket Advisory Committee (“CAC”), is presently taking a position that the noticee is exposed to an alleged conflict of interest. It is reiterated that the noticee was declared as the Mumbai Indians ‘ICON’ post his retirement in 2013, which was much prior to his appointment to the CAC in 2015,” Tendulkar has stated in his response.advertisementJust like Laxman, Tendulkar also reiterated that neither the CEO nor the CoA had ever clarified the terms of reference with regards to his appointment in CAC.”The noticee (Tendulkar) has time and again sought clarification from the BCCI on the scope of his role in the CAC – but has not received a response from BCCI till date. BCCI is aware that the CAC merely performs an advisory/ recommendatory role – and therefore, the noticee’s role as a Mumbai Indians Icon (which in fact has always been in the public domain) cannot, in any practical way, conflict with his involvement in the CAC.What has possibly irked Tendulkar is BCCI’s contradictory stand which he has specified in point No 12.”The noticee fails to understand how the BCCI (after having appointed him to the CAC) can now maintain its current stand that he is in a position of ‘tractable’ conflict of interest. The BCCI Response does not clarify this variance in its stance and the noticee requests the Hon’ble Ethics Officer to call upon BCCI Officials, Mr. Rahul Johri and Mr. Vinod Rai to clarify this position.”Tendulkar also pointed out how he had recused himself from the recruitment process of the national U-19 selection committee as his son Arjun was a contender in the Colts team.”It is critical to note that the noticee had specifically written to the BCCI in respect of the potential conflict of interest that could have arisen in the aforesaid scenario,” he wrote referring to that particular situation. What has hurt Tendulkar is the fact that he is being asked questions despite serving Indian cricket for two decades.”The noticee has served the Indian cricket team for more than 2 decades and accepted empanelment with the CAC to help and contribute towards the growth of Indian cricket. It is unfortunate that the noticee has to clarify the questions raised in the Complaint and BCCI Response.”The noticee repeats that BCCI is responsible for the situation created in terms of the noticee’s honorary empanelment to the CAC even though he was a Mumbai Indians Icon at the relevant time. The BCCI shall be called upon to clarify the issue,” Tendulkar also mentioned in his response. Also Read | BCCI Ombudsman issues notices to Sachin Tendulkar, VVS LaxmanAlso Read | Prithvi Shaw thrilled after dinner with Sachin Tendulkarlast_img read more

Earlylife exercise promotes healthy brain

first_imgThe research indicates that there may be a window of opportunity during early human development to optimise the chances of better lifelong health.“Exercise affects many aspects of health, both metabolic and mental, and people are only now starting to look at the plasticity of these gut microbes,” said senior study author Monika Fleshner from University of Colorado Boulder in the US. Microbes take up residence within human intestines shortly after birth and are vital to the development of the immune system and various neural functions. The human gut harbours over 100 trillion microorganisms. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’These microbes can add as many as five million genes to a person’s overall genetic profile and thus have tremendous power to influence aspects of human physiology. While this diverse microbial community remains somewhat malleable throughout adult life and can be influenced by environmental factors such as diet and sleep patterns, the researchers found that gut microorganisms are especially ‘plastic’ at a young age.last_img read more

Worldwide Outage YouTube Facebook and Google Cloud goes down affecting thousands of

first_imgIt looks like the ‘outage flu’ isn’t over yet. Yesterday, YouTube, Facebook, and Google Cloud all went down, affecting millions of users. This is only weeks after both GitHub and YouTube faced a worldwide outage issue that lasted for well over half an hour for users worldwide. YouTube users took to Twitter, yesterday, to vent their frustration. A range of issues were reported, from video playback to other error messages. The YouTube team hasn’t responded to the incident and outlined what they believe the cause of the outage was. So far, the team has only tweeted saying that they’re aware of the issue and have received similar reports from users. Facebook goes down Facebook also went down yesterday during the morning on the west coast of the U.S… The outage lasted for about 40 minutes. The website showed an error simply saying “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can” to users trying to access the site. Users also faced difficulties using Facebook Messenger. The outage was a result of an issue caused due to a routine test conducted by Facebook. Problems on Google Cloud Google cloud also faced the same fate as Youtube and Facebook as it went down yesterday afternoon at around 1:12 PM PT and ended at 2:35 PM PT. Users faced connectivity issues when using a number of Google services including  Google APIs, load balancers, and other external IP addresses. The Google support team posted an update on the outage on Google Cloud status dashboard. “Throughout the duration of this issue Google services were operating as expected and we believe the root cause of the issue was external to Google. We will conduct an internal investigation of this issue and make appropriate improvements to our systems to help prevent or minimize future recurrence”. Google also tweeted back to users who were complaining about the outage.
