first_imgLYNWOOD – Only in the CIF-Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs could a two-time defending state-champion win a quarter-finals game and have it be considered an upset. That was the case on Saturday night when the Bishop Amat High School girls basketball team, seeded No. 5 in the division, posted a 57-52 upset of No. 4-seeded Lynwood. There’s been quite a few, in fact. Saturday’s win was Amat’s 19th consecutive postseason victory dating back to 2005. The Lancers improved to 24-4 and will host nationally-ranked Long Beach Poly at a site to be determined on Tuesday night. Things have gotten considerably tougher for Amat, which was moved up from Division III-A this season after winning three consecutive Southern Section titles. The Lancers also own the past two Division III state championships. “For us to come in here and beat them, that’s a great win,” Amat coach Richard Wiard said. “They’re as good as any team we’ve beaten in the past three years.” center_img 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
