ITER won’t generate any electricity That job will be left for its successor the prototype power plant DEMO Fusion researchers are just starting to think about designs for DEMO but it is looking increasingly likely that it won’t be a global collaboration like ITER whose members are China the European Union India Japan Russia South Korea and the United States Korea announced recently that it was beginning preliminary design work on a next-step reactor called K-DEMO China is already working on a design for an intermediate step between ITER and DEMO called the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor And now EFDA has laid out its own path to DEMO The agency doesn’t preclude international collaboration but has designed the road map so that any research will fit within the confines of the EU fusion budget for 2014 to 2020 although that may have to be revised once the overall EU budget is agreed upon later this year The EFDA road map acknowledges that ITER is the key to progress toward fusion power and so all efforts should be made to ensure its success including researching various operating scenarios on smaller existing reactors The biggest unanswered question the road map says is how to remove heat exhaust from a future machine ITER and other similar modern reactors known as tokamaks have a structure at the bottom known as a divertor which among other things removes spent fuel from the plasma vessel As the only place in the vessel where the plasma deliberately touches a solid surface it must also absorb a lot of heat ITER’s divertor is made of stainless steel and coated with tungsten This should work in a research reactor which operates at lower power and for at most a few minutes at a time but DEMO will generate several gigawatts of power continuously and that heat load may be too much for a standard diverter The road map says researchers must work on other designs as a backup These could involve alternative shapes that spread out the area of contact to reduce the heat load or allow the plasma to radiate more heat before coming into contact with the diverter Alternatives should be tested on an adapted existing tokamak or a purpose-built test facility EFDA says Another big unknown is what material to use for the structure and lining of DEMO’s plasma vessel and other plasma-facing components Fusion produces high-energy neutrons and the bombardment from DEMO will be intense The neutrons knock atoms in solids out of position weakening them and making them radioactive Research is needed to find materials that can stand up to decades of sustained neutron bombardment but there is no existing neutron source intense enough to test them A design for an accelerator-based neutron source is being developed as an adjunct to the ITER project but EFDA thinks something is needed sooner EFDA also wants more work done on the so-called "tritium blanket" sections of the plasma vessel wall in which neutrons from the reactor convert lithium into tritium one of the fusion fuels Alternative blanket designs should be developed in case the one to be tested on ITER is not successful The road map also calls for greater involvement from industry in preparations for DEMO since it will have to take over fusion development once DEMO is complete and for plasma theory and modeling to be strengthened As an ultimate backup plan the road map advocates continuing research on stellarators an alternative fusion reactor scheme that fell out of favor when tokamaks came on the scene in the late 1960s Germany’s Wendelstein 7-X stellarator which is due to be finished next year could provide the model for a later energy-producing version dubbed HELIAS Written by Express News Service | Pune | Published: February 13 2010 5:54 am Related News Lakhs of customers of Hathway Network in the city have been deprived of watching 33 channels of Zee network including Zee TVZee CinemaZee Marathi and Cartoon Network While Zee Turner that distributes the channels to cable operators claims that it stopped the service to Hathwayas it did not pay the long pending duesHathway officials claim that it was an attempt by Zee Turner to malign the image of Hathway in the wake of the latter coming up with IPO Broadcast of 33 channels of Zee Network on Hathway stopped from Friday and customers were deprived of watching channels like Zee TVZee CinemaZee MarathiCartoon NetworkPogoHBOZee MarathiZee KannadaZee TeluguZee Café and Zee Studio For all the latest Pune News download Indian Express App More Related NewsAfter rushing through a 3-6

the Kochi-Muziris Biennale opens in the port town on December 12 curator Sudarshan Shetty maintains a calm The Mumbai-based artist known for his larger-than-life works is perhaps working on his largest showing — the Biennale that will bring together 97 artists from 37 countries The 55-year-old talks about political intervention in art censorship and his recent work This year apart from visual artists the Biennale has writers poets musicians theatre practitioners including stage performances by Anamika Haksar and Kalakshetra Manipur and Sangam poetry recitals Why did you think it was important to cut across disciplines It’s about looking at practitioners who are outside the expectations of a Biennale space The life outside a museum or gallery space is very different A lot of us learn art through western cannons of the history of art which I think is a very limited space There is a vast difference in where you come from and the way you look at the world how you are and the way you are taught to make art I started with looking at the points of mediation My conversation with people ‘outside the expectation’ was an interesting one A lot of them are very contemporary even if they are pursuing traditional art practices The question that came from there was what does it mean to be contemporary; what does it mean to be together in time if that is what contemporary means The first participant we announced was Chilean poet Raul Zurita who also thinks visually That was followed by musicians writers theatre people This opened new ways of looking even within the art world We have a 26-year-old artist as well as a 83-year-old musician John Tilbury How would you describe the role of a curator What are the interventions required to be made One of the questions was if it was possible to side step from the image of a curator as a creator of culture and knowledge to someone who is a facilitator It’s a much more organic way of looking at things and we followed that Works are not in constellation one after another in a linear narrative that is built up It is about building sub narratives between the works and through the Biennale between the audience and the works There have been numerous concerns regarding political intervention in art Has that impacted the Biennale Also will Pakistani artists who are participating in the Biennale be travelling to Kochi I think politics or a voice of dissent can be seen at various levels It need not be the headline of a work A lot of work is political it is a way of asserting your own space in the society or the world I don’t think the Pakistani artists participating in the Biennale will be able to travel to Kochi; that’s very sad Many in the art world have termed 2016 as the year of Sudarshan Shetty what do you think of that For me every year is my year (laughs) It has been a busy year first I showed “Shaunya Ghar” in January in Delhi that travelled to Sydney and then the Yinchuan Biennale Recently I did a show with Rolls Royce You are the first Indian artist to be selected for the Rolls Royce Art Programme The work that was made public last month has folk elements if you could tell us a bit about that Also I was reading that as a child you were fascinated with the Rolls Royce It’s about the legacy the car has My father would often refer to things as ‘the Rolls Royce of sweets’ or the ‘Rolls Royce of furniture’ So it is part of my growing up in some ways it became an object I associated with sophistication The song that I have used is one I heard in my childhood It is a quintessential story about a story and a song The story is about a woman who has a great story and a song but hasn’t shared them with anyone The story and song seek revenge and turn themselves into an umbrella and pair of shoes When her husband comes home one evening he sees the umbrella and shoes and thinks she’s cheating on him The angry husband heads to the ‘temple of lights’ where lights from every household converse with each other The light from the couple’s house tells the other lights what happened The husband realises his mistake returns home and asks his wife about the story and the song But they are gone The moral of the story is that if you have a story tell it and if you have a song sing it otherwise you will lose them Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s work was removed from the Yinchuan Biennale this year and Sun Xun’s video work has also been removed from the ongoing Shanghai Biennale Is there any censorship in the Kochi Biennale There has been no problem so far In China there would be a different level of censorship We have invited all kinds of artists we don’t know where the protest could come from or what will invite censorship For all the latest Lifestyle News download Indian responses which can help unlock the mysteries of the brain ( Image for representation Source: Thinkstock) Related News Researchers have created world’s tiniest hammer to precisely measure how force affects brain cells an advance that may pave the way for better treatments against traumatic brain injuries and diseases like Alzheimer’s Researchers at University of California Santa Barbara in the US have built a tiny machine called microHammer “Mechanical forces have been shown to impact cells a lot” said Kimberly Turner from UC Santa Barbara Watch all our videos from Express Technology Far from being isolated units of life cells – stem cells in particular – take cues from their environment that for example direct them to differentiate into one type of cell or another or to start healing processes However a major limitation to understanding the reactions of individual neural cells to forces has been the inability to reliably apply impact or pressure to them MicroHammer a cellular-scale machine built to tap strike squeeze and poke individual neural progenitors elicits responses that will then be studied and recorded to add to a body of knowledge that can help unlock the mysteries of the brain Modelled after cell-sorting technology used typically for medical diagnostics and immunotherapies the MicroHammer flows individual cells through and subjects each of them to one of a variety of physical forces “This project will enable precision measurements of the physical chemical and biological changes that occur when cells are subjected to mechanical loading ranging from small perturbations to high-force high-speed impacts” said Megan Valentine from UC Santa Barbara “Our technology will provide significantly higher forces and faster impact cycles than have previously been possible and by building these tools onto microfluidic devices we can leverage a host of other on-chip diagnostics and imaging tools and can collect the cells after testing for longer-term studies” said Valentine Also Read:From the lab: A small step towards treating brain tumour With the new devices and methods Valentine said the researchers expect to gain fundamentally new insight into the causes and progress of brain injuries due to trauma The MicroHammer is currently undergoing the process of characterisation whereby the types and magnitudes of forces it can apply are being measured and recorded in anticipation of the first set of neuron-smashing experiments The knowledge gained by these experiments could pave the way toward a better understanding of neural conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease as well as traumatic brain injury It may also lead to better prevention of such injuries by elucidating for instance what types of forces affect the neural cells most so helmets can be designed to buffer them It will have broad applications beyond brain cell research and help researchers gain insight on how forces affect other cells and tissue types For all News The age-old bugle call trumpet sounds that have been used to signal the start and recall of a military charge — the shrill sound that would rise above the chaos and clatter of combat drum rolls that would recall the soldiers to their barracks or guide the infantry on the battlefield the quaint ditties popular in the World Wars patriotic pieces and the clarinet and trombone combinations used for the entertainment of the soldiers in war zones all of them came alive at Siri Fort Auditorium in Delhi on Friday in one of the more extraordinary concerts in recent times The Indian Naval Symphonic Orchestra which is an internationally-acclaimed 80-piece orchestra and has acquired apex status among the other Indian military orchestras regaled and enthralled the audience with a wide repertoire of stirring martial music arrangements of western classical Indian classical and other forms of contemporary popular and folk music It is notable that the same band was the highlight of this year’s Beating Retreat Ceremony Conducted under the baton of Commander VC D’Cruz the current Director of Music for Indian Navy the concert after a short fanfare piece titled Man of war which was played to announce the arrival of President Pranab Mukherjee went into The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart one of the most frequently performed operas in the world A comic opera it had the oboes bassoons the clarinets the trumpets and a cello find a balance with the scuttling strings that created an explosive burst of energy This was followed by Joyful skeleton which literally had an officer dress up like a skeleton and match the notes with the orchestra on a xylophone A piece by WG Lemon the moment the “skeleton” began to hit the wooden bars with mallets it created a fun moment that had everyone laughing The music however remained precise even in the fun moments The one percussionist on the bass drums played with much gusto The young man smiled laughed exchanged looks with his rather serious co-performers while playing faultless high-speed beats for 90 minutes of the concert This was followed by Glen Miller’s iconic swing piece In the mood It opened with the repeated arpeggios on the saxophones and triumphantly climbed up with the trumpets and trombones It was interesting how D’Cruz kept the original harmonies intact not playing around with any bar anywhere “Inserting one’s own harmonies into the works of the masters isn’t an idea that works well So we generally do not touch the iconic pieces” he said After a short attempt at Chariots of fire the theme piece of the popular British drama the orchestra played a piece called Fusion based on the Carnatic classical raga Shanmuga It had the trumpets the saxophone and cellos work together with a flute mridangam and the tabla Every note was cradled carefully and given to the audience with much finesse The flute didn’t work as well as the saxophone but overall the piece was lucid This was followed by Tagore’s Ekla chalo re dressed simply despite strong brass instruments playing it but made sombre with a tabla and a manjeera But it was the rousing tribute to Raj Kapoor that had much to admire Opening with the violin prelude of Mera Naam Joker’s Jeena yahan on a saxophone it was followed by many other ditties of the showman and had the audience swaying along This was followed by John Brown’s Body that was purely martial music which in older days was used to make the soldiers return to their barracks The best however was saved for the last Just before the tri-services song comprising the three anthems of the three forces a host of musicians with snare drums and multi-tenor drums marched onto the stage and drummed up a storm The ferocious drumming a reverse moonwalk and some dance moves had the audience applauding The evening concluded with Kavi Iqbal’s Saare Jahan se achha and the national anthem Military bands are sometimes now referred to as colonial remnants playing music to nourish the morale of the forces But there is something more there There’s the spirit like that of the bass drummer there’s precision like that of the entire brass section and there’s music not just the ruffles and flourishes but the kind that lets the military overcome the darkest of times For all the latest Lifestyle News download Indian Express App More Top News The song from ? 2015 External sector is now far
